Though they are found in many forms, all antioxidants are not created equally—they are categorised as either “primary” or “secondary” (or what Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh refers to as “first” or “second”) generation antioxidants, depending on their ability to protect the skin. Preliminary studies suggest that although the second generation antioxidants found in many skin care products, such as vitamins C and E, can slow down free radicals after they are formed—the more powerful first generation antioxidants can more effectively protect against harmful effects of free radical oxidation damage.
